Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Tichnor, AR.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Tichnor which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
