Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Avondale, AZ.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Avondale which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
