Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Clay Springs, AZ.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Clay Springs which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
