Medicaid is an insurance program for low-income households that because of the Affordable Care Act they are required to cover basic substance abuse treatment. Medicaid is currently the single largest payer for mental health treatment services in the country, and is starting to play an important role in the reimbursements of treatment for drug and alcohol treatment. Medicaid holders may want to consider that while this is the case, not all rehab programs will take Medicaid. At rehab centers which do take Medicaid, individuals won't have co-payments in most states. For states which do charge co-pays, there are limits to the out-of-pocket expenses for subscribers. Rehabilitation services covered by Medicaid include intervention, screenings, counseling, medication maintenance, detox, inpatient, long-term residential, outpatient and behavioral health services.

If an individual in Tucson wants to get Medicaid to pay for rehabilitation, they must meet the following guidelines: 1) Be over 65 years of age or under 19 years old 2) be pregnant or a parent and 3) fall within a specific income bracket. Each state also has their own guidelines, limitations and eligibility requisites and these change each year. So, someone who didn't qualify for Medicaid in their state in the previous year may qualify this year.
