But unlike Methadone that can only be dispensed in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The cost monthly of buprenorphine is approximately $300 per month for the generic version of the medication. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, that is a med which reverses the effects of opioids. Someone taking this formulation, also known as Suboxone, would find it more difficult to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken every day, and is priced about $450 per month. Naltrexone is an additional med taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it is an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents someone from feeling high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 a month.
