American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Discovery Bay face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, particularly those who live in rural areas. Facilities providing drug and alcohol rehab services in rural areas commonly are not capable of offering support intended for the needs of this special group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can consult with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to figure out which services are an option for them and through which facilities, and which ones will be most effective for their scenario. There have been many grants sanctioned in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
