Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Mill Valley, CA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Mill Valley which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
