Regular outpatient recovery is usually a less costly alternative to more intensive outpatient centers or inpatient rehab, and is the lowest intensity of formal drug or alcohol treatment around in Ontario. Some clients are in treatment for the first time and have chosen regular outpatient because that is all they can afford and time commitment and logistically because of school, work or other obligations. For many, regular outpatient is a "step-down" from treatment in a more intense outpatient facility like a partial hospitalization or inpatient center.

Regular out-patient rehabilitation services have group and individual counseling services delivered once or twice a week. Facilities which offer a wider spectrum of services may include counseling (behavioral therapy) to assist with relapse prevention and dual-diagnosis services to help address co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders. How long a client stays involved in rehab can change from client to client, and a person's improvement can be assessed from time to time and an extension of treatment can be recommended based on these evaluations.

In some cases, a regular outpatient rehab facility is going to be lacking in intensity for a client who is attempting to address a chronic substance abuse problem and has never experienced treatment before or has fallen off the wagon after previous outpatient treatment.
