Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Palos Verdes Peninsula that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is encouraged.
