Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Red Bluff, CA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Red Bluff which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
