American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to rehabilitation for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in San Ardo face is access to effective services, particularly those who live in secluded regions. Programs offering drug and alcohol rehab services in rural areas often are not capable of offering support intended for the needs of this special group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which treatment services are an option for them and through which rehab facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
