Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Cheyenne Wells, CO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Cheyenne Wells that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
