Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Pitkin, CO.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Pitkin that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
