It is a known fact that clients in rehabilitation for alcohol and/or drug addiction are more likely to be smokers, 75% in fact. As such very few centers address the situation as a main addiction, even though the fact that helping individuals stop smoking while in rehab is associated with a 25% greater possibility they will stay sober from alcohol and drugs. As a result, there are 'smoking not allowed' drug rehabilitation programs in Trinidad that enforce a smoking ban and most of them also provide nicotine addiction treatment.
While complete bans on smoking are definitely not the norm, an increasing number of facilities are actually starting to enforce their own bans, but also state and local tobacco-free workplace mandates attempt to make rehabs completely smoke free. In doing so, these mandates avoid the need to develop and implement facility policies that are already legally in place and enforced legally by state and local agencies. Enforcing a ban on smoking may make hesitant potential clients who smoke starting treatment. At the same time it will help those who do choose a smoking not allowed alcohol and/or drug addiction rehab program be better able to get sober in a completely addiction and drug free environment.
