Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Cornwall, CT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Cornwall which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
