Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Hebron, CT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Hebron that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
