Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Plainville, CT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Plainville which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
