Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Marydel, DE.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Marydel that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
