Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Bristol, FL.

There are programs offered in or near Bristol that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
