Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Callahan, FL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Callahan which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
