Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Cape Coral, FL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Cape Coral which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
