Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Grand Ridge, FL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Grand Ridge which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
