Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.
There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.
