Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Mary Esther, FL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Mary Esther that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
