Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Mc Intosh, FL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Mc Intosh which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
