Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Orange Lake, FL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Orange Lake which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
