Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Sopchoppy, FL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Sopchoppy which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
