Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Sparr, FL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Sparr which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
