Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Wellborn, FL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Wellborn that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
