Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Zellwood, FL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Zellwood which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
