Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Andersonville, GA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Andersonville that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
