Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Darien, GA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Darien which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
