Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Hartsfield, GA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Hartsfield which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
