The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted people. An opioid rehabilitation facility can receive basic approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the kind of accreditation that was given.
