Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Macon, GA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Macon which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
