Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Port Wentworth, GA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Port Wentworth that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
