Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Tybee Island, GA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Tybee Island which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
