Medicaid is an insurance program for low-income families that due to the Affordable Care Act they are required to cover basic substance abuse treatment. Medicaid is currently the single largest payer for mental health treatment services in the country, and is beginning to play a considerable role in the reimbursements of treatment for drug and alcohol treatment. Medicaid subscribers will want to keep in mind that while this is the case, not all rehabilitation centers will take Medicaid. At rehabilitation programs which do accept Medicaid, clients won't have co-payments in most states. For states which do charge co-pays, there are limits to the out-of-pocket expenses for recipients. Services covered by Medicaid include intervention, screenings, medication maintenance, counseling, inpatient, detox, long-term residential, outpatient and mental health services.
