Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Hawaii National Park, HI.

It is estimated that around 75% of clients at residential rehabilitation centers for drug and alcohol addiction are smokers. While it is true that nicotine is addicting and people in rehab for addiction should strive to be abstinent from all addictive substances, this can introduce problems that make enforcing a non-smoking facility outweigh the benefits of this restriction. A person who is addicted to a substance that could very well kill them immediately might not go to treatment if they have to quit smoking cigarettes, so many rehab centers in Hawaii National Park allow smoking with some restrictions, limitations and in designated areas of their facility.

Some programs permit clients to smoke anywhere, so long as it is outside for instance. Some rehab centers have a designated smoking area, and this is the only area that clients are allowed to smoke in. Because nicotine is addictive, even rehab facilities that allow smoking commonly introduce alternatives to smoking if the client wants to quit, such as nicotine replacement gum, patches and prescriptions. There are also programs which permit smoking in designated areas, but provide education on the health risks associated with smoking by incorporating this into their program either by way of direct one on one counseling or by offering educational literature for clients to consider. In programs which allow smoking in designated areas this is typically only authorized for clients, whereas staff are sometimes banned from smoking at the center or are encouraged to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded drug and alcohol rehab centers are obligated by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are enforced by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehabilitation programs have a little more leeway and don't have as many rules and restrictions imposed on them, so they be more likely to offer designated areas for smoking.
