The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Koloa are programs which are legally allowed to give out the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary services aside from medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab facility can receive initial certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the kind of certification that was given.
