Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Beacon, IA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Beacon that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
