Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Center Junction, IA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Center Junction that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
