Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Dexter, IA.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Dexter which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
