There are recovery programs offered in or near Floyd that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
