Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Lorimor, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Lorimor which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
