Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Pilot Mound, IA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Pilot Mound that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
