Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Redding, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Redding that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
