Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Rock Valley, IA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Rock Valley which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
