Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Shenandoah, IA.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Shenandoah which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will instead not engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is encouraged.
