Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Sibley, IA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Sibley which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
